  • Strathmore Square Phase I&II

    North Bethesda, Maryland
    Snapshot:

Strathmore Square reimagines transit-oriented multifamily development as a layered landscape of movement, gathering, discovery, and respite. Located between Rock Creek Park, the Strathmore Music Center, and the Grosvenor-Strathmore Metro Station, the project weaves nature, art, and daily life into a welcoming environment where landscape and community intersect. The project includes a civic plaza, two courtyards, a penthouse terrace, eight roof terraces, and cascading residential balconies, creating a sequence of public gathering spaces, shared amenities, and private retreats. Inspired by the geology of Rock Creek Park and Strathmore’s musical heritage, the landscape incorporates water, stone, and native plantings to unify the design. Like a musical composition, each space unfolds through movement and pause, offering moments of connection and exploration.

Site constraints—including limited soil depth, structural capacity, stormwater requirements, and utilities—became opportunities for innovation. An elevated pool deck provides depth for both pool and soil volumes, supporting plant growth while enriching spatial experience. Integrated stormwater systems and green roofs
balance drainage, water quality, and runoff. The material palette—dark granite, boulders, wood, and native plantings—reflects the region’s character, creating places that connect to their natural and
    cultural context.

    Awards:

    2026 Potomac ASLA Honor Award

The landscape blends the natural beauty of Rock Creek Park, the creative energy of Strathmore, and connectivity to the Metro Station. Thoughtful outdoor spaces foster gathering, exploration, and relaxation, creating a welcoming environment for residents and visitors.

    FRAMEWORK

The project includes a civic plaza, two courtyards, a penthouse terrace, roof terraces, private balconies, and the streetscape along Tuckerman Lane. Each space has a distinct character while remaining connected through forms, views, and materials inspired by nature and music.

    CASCADING TERRACES

Cascading roof terraces open to Rock Creek Park, a central asset of the project. Thoughtful grading, materials, and plantings allow the terraces to flow naturally from the park, forming a seamless connection between the park and the development.

    TUCKERMAN LANE FAÇADE

To celebrate nature, the Tuckerman Lane façade features planters with native shrubs, ornamental grasses, and cascading plants. Arranged in a rhythmic pattern and offering year-round interest, the planters extend to ground-level stormwater management gardens, reinforcing the project’s sustainability and environmental goals.

    THE FLOW

Like Rock Creek and a piece of music, the two third-floor courtyards are designed to “flow.” Organic walkways connect building entrances, guiding residents through intimate seating, dining, yoga spaces, and the elevated pool deck. Paving patterns in varying gray tones echo the natural movement of the creek.

    THE COURTYARDS

The courtyards offer a variety of experiences, including rock seating with fire pits, outdoor dining, a yoga terrace, and the pool deck. Together, they invite residents to see the sky, feel the wind, hear the birds, and connect with one another through discovery in an ever-changing landscape.

    CIVIC PLAZA

The civic plaza serves as a bridge between private amenity spaces and the public park along the Metro side. It acts as an outdoor stage for community gatherings while providing a green buffer for residents. Paving patterns echo courtyard landscape motifs and gradually transition into the surrounding streetscape.

GREEN STOP ON THE RED LINE

As a transit-oriented development, Strathmore Square shows how thoughtful landscape strategies, intentional space planning, and careful material selection allow nature, art, transit, and people to coexist, enriching one another and creating a harmonious, vibrant environment that celebrates connection, movement, and everyday life.
