Up Close and Personal

Streetscape design needs to be personal. It needs to be user-friendly and easy to navigate. The streetscape is the ground upon which we walk, bike, scoot, drive, or ride, and all of these modes of mobility must work in synchronicity, without fault or conflict. We sit on benches, park bikes at bike racks or docking stations, maneuver along accessible paths and ramps, and migrate from street to storefront, park, or home.

Balance, Resiliency and Social Equity

Given the right opportunities, our streetscapes have the power to bring resiliency and social equity to our communities by balancing the needs and making multiple modes of transportation and mobility options available to a wide range of users. Streets now need to function as a web of mobility and no longer simply a needle and thread to get from point A to point B.

Healthy Streets

A well-designed street will provide increased pedestrian walkability and activity at all hours and can be done so while increasing environmental benefits.  Addressing stormwater runoff by adding rain gardens or bioretention planters not only soften and beautify the street but also function to remove contaminants from stormwater.  Street trees, while often not a requirement, provide shade, reduce temperatures from urban heat island, and provide an architectural definition of space, all while taking up to 48 pounds of CO2 (per tree) every year, helping to clear the air that we breath.
