Mercy Medical Center
As part of a major expansion of this downtown Baltimore hospital, an 18-story tower provides state-of-the-art operating facilities, private in-patient rooms, and a variety of other key programs and services. Mahan Rykiel Associates was responsible for the design of three rooftop gardens and all street level improvements.
Each garden has distinct design elements tailored to the adjacent hospital care units. The 8th floor garden offers a bubbling fountain, shady trellis, ample tables and chairs, and lush plantings geared to both visitors and patients of the Maternity unit. The 9th Floor garden provides quiet secluded seating areas appropriate for small groups of visitors and staff of the Intensive Care unit. The 10th floor has a small planted area for visual access only.
The gardens also eliminated the need for at-grade storm water remediation, will reduce heating and cooling costs for the building, and will extend the life of the roof.
