University of Maryland Physical Sciences Building
College Park, Maryland

The new Physical Science Complex is planned to be one of the most high-tech buildings on the University grounds. The complex , which consists of one new building that connects two existing buildings, is a significant showcase for the academic community as it incorporates the study of physics at the macro and micro levels – a concept that focuses on both the vastness of the universe and the world under a microscope.

Working with the design team, MRA developed a site plan that includes:
• the first vegetated roof on the College Park campus
• harvesting rainwater for irrigation purposes
• an outdoor amphitheater
• comprehensive collaboration with the design team to allow hardscape and plantings
over laboratories buried two stories below

Located along a significant circulation route between the student housing sector and the academic core, the building incorporates a breezeway through which students and visitors are encouraged to engage the science of physics.
