University of Maryland- Southwest Sector Open Space Plan

Mahan Rykiel was part of a design team retained to prepare plans for an extensive new open space system in the southwest area of the campus. A recently completed comprehensive master plan identified several opportunities to convert surface parking areas into new open spaces. The focus of the Southwest Sector is a major pedestrian promenade and a new mall. Each of these significant open spaces will link existing student housing and academic buildings with new student housing, and future academic buildings.
Mahan Rykiel Associates addressed pedestrian circulation, the creation of gathering areas and phased implementation of the open space improvements.
