Hagerstown Community College
Hagerstown, Maryland
While the main campus core is on a hilltop, the Hagerstown Community College landscape is characterized by steep topography with significant rock outcroppings. This poses serious challenges for pedestrian circulation and for the development of outdoor gathering areas.
Master Plan
Working with the architectural team and College stakeholders, MRA has developed solutions for the site design which use building placement, roadway alignments, pathway layouts and planting design to create a more cohesive and pedestrian friendly campus environment. These solutions carefully integrate and celebrate the unique topographic features which give this campus its uncommon character.
STEM Building
One of several buildings proposed for the Arts and Sciences complex, this building will blend state of the art architecture and a sophisticated system for rainwater harvest. Taking advantage of the site topography, MRA developed a series of runnels, water stairs, flow-through planters, scuppers and waterfalls which use stormwater and building condensate to provide natural irrigation and to create decorative water features. These elements are incorporated into the new building entrance and animate student use areas on multiple levels.
This building is currently under construction.
