Richard Jones, LEED AP
President
Richard Jones joins Scott Rykiel in managing the firm. A graduate of the University of Maryland, Richard joined the firm in 2001. During his tenure with Mahan Rykiel, Richard led the design for many award winning projects including the Four Seasons Baltimore, Hilton Convention Center Hotel, The Vue and T. Rowe Price headquarters. An expert on green roof design, Richard has lectured and been published in national magazines and books on the topic.
Scott Rykiel, PLA, FASLA
Executive Vice President
Scott Rykiel has over 30 years of experience as a landscape architect on a wide variety of projects. He has completed numerous high-profile, international, retail and hospitality projects bringing multi-disciplinary projects to completion on time and within budget. With a background in Horticulture and working globally, he has become an expert plantsman in temperate, arid and tropical climates. Scott has been heavily involved in the design work and management of his 41- person firm since 1993. He was elected to the Council of Fellows of the American Society of Landscape Architects in 2006.
Cathy Snellinger
Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
Cathy Snellinger has been with Mahan Rykiel practically since its inception in 1983, managing the accounting affairs of the firm. Over the years, her responsibilities have increased to include human resources and overseeing all aspects of the financial operations of the firm. She brings more than 28 years of experience and dedication to Mahan Rykiel.
Catherine Mahan, FASLA
Chair of the Board
Catherine Mahan founded the firm in 1983. Since the founding, Mahan Rykiel has grown in size from a sole proprietorship to a firm of 40. In 2012, she stepped down as President, but is now serving as Chair of the Board of Directors. In that role, she retains managerial oversight of the company. Catherine’s passion for the design of public sector work, particularly in the healthcare and campus environments, helped to expand Mahan Rykiel’s visibility in the region.

Charlie Bailey, PLA, FASLA
Principal
Charlie Bailey is a planner and landscape architect who has served as director and design lead for a wide range of project types including, mixed-use centers, corporate headquarters, park and recreation facilities and corridor studies. He has crafted master plans to guide development of such projects over time and has been responsible for the site design and construction documents for numerous assignments. In developing consensus-based solutions, Charlie has facilitated stakeholder interviews, public presentation and feedback sessions and broad-based design charettes.
Bob Gorman, PLA, FASLA
Principal
Bob Gorman began his career planning new communities, urban and waterfront redevelopment projects. Mr. Gorman’s portfolio covers an international spectrum of assignments from the competition-winning design for the development of a new waterfront town center for Kishiwada, Japan, to a design strategy to enhance tourism along the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, Scotland. His work includes plans for retail, office campuses, new communities and schemes to revitalize urban neighborhoods and downtowns.
Lydia Kimball, PLA, ASLA
Principal
With over 25 years of experience, Lydia Kimball has developed a particular expertise in site design projects for senior living, healthcare, and academic facilities. Her work is reflective of the context and character of the site and architecture, with a focus on the horticultural aspects of design, especially in the areas of sustainability and low impact development. She has been a presenter at healthcare conferences and writes regularly on healthcare and higher education topics.
Tom McGilloway, PLA, ASLA
Principal
Tom McGilloway has extensive experience managing and participating in a broad range of master planning and implementation projects. His experience ranges from broad strategic planning to detailed site and landscape architectural design for both private and public sector clients, providing him with a thorough understanding of the project process from concept development through implementation. Projects include downtown and corridor revitalization, design guidelines, site planning, park planning and design and campus planning. Tom has developed specific experience related to public facilitation and working with stakeholder groups.
J. Kenneth Schmidt, Jr., PLA, ASLA
Principal
Ken Schmidt has experience as a landscape architect on a wide variety of projects, including streetscapes, transportation corridors, hiker/biker trails, government buildings, campuses and office parks. He has extensive experience in all facets of transportation design including community consensus building and working with multi-disciplinary teams. His strong design skills and graphic abilities are an asset in communicating ideas to clients. He currently serves as the QA/QC Manager at Mahan Rykiel and oversees all outgoing work. He has received numerous design awards for his work.
Warren Timlen, PLA
Principal
With over 14 years at Mahan Rykiel, Warren leads a team of designers in planning, retail and international projects. Focused on urban master planning, mixed use and retail design, his project management experience includes site design as well as planning large mixed use retail centers and resorts. Warren is interested in the complimentary combination of hardscape and planting elements working together to provide the best possible design solutions.
